Getting Named by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode

Google gives ten results. An AI assistant gives one answer and names two or three businesses. There is no page two to fall back on. This is the work of making sure your business is one of the names.

Quick answer

Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, is the work of getting a business named when someone asks an AI assistant instead of searching Google. TopWebLA does it for included in every TopWebLA SEO plan from $497/mo, or $697 per month on its own. US agencies charge $1,500 to $10,000 a month for the same service, and the leading GEO agency in Los Angeles does not publish prices at all. It is not the same as SEO: AI assistants quote self-contained answers, published prices and structured data, not keyword density.

Why this is suddenly urgent

When someone searches Google, ten results compete and you can be number four and still get the call. When someone asks ChatGPT or Google's AI Mode, there is one answer naming two or three businesses. Being fourth means not existing.

We measured this directly in our own industry. Searching Google's AI Mode for a service provider in Los Angeles returned one business with a 5.0 rating and 653 reviews. The AI did not quote a single website — it answered from business profiles. That is the kind of thing you only learn by testing, and it changes what you should be working on.

For comparison, US agency GEO packages run $1,500 to $10,000 per month, with basic tiers starting around $2,000.

What actually makes an AI cite you

Self-contained answers. A model quotes a passage that answers the question completely on its own, naming the business. "Prices vary, contact us" cannot be quoted. "A solo performer is $200 for 30 minutes" can.

Published prices. The most common question people ask an assistant about any service is what it costs. If your number is not written down, you are not in the answer.

Structured data. Machine-readable markup that tells the model what your business is, what it offers, where, and what questions it answers. Our mobile bar site carries 5,170 blocks across 39 types.

Question-shaped pages. Content organized as real questions with direct answers, not marketing paragraphs. Talking about a topic is advertising and models do not quote it. Answering the questions people ask about it is citable.

Your Google Business Profile. For "find me a vendor" questions, assistants answer from profiles, not websites. Category, hours and review count decide whether you appear. No amount of website work substitutes for this.

Presence where models read. Reddit appeared in five of seven searches we ran in one industry. YouTube is fully indexed and carries transcripts models read as text. These are not links, they are surfaces.

What we do not promise

Nobody controls what an AI says, and anyone selling guaranteed placement in ChatGPT is selling something they cannot deliver. There is no admin panel for this. What we do is make a business the most quotable answer available — published numbers, structured data, direct answers, real reviews — and then measure whether assistants start naming it.

Proof

We built this architecture on our own businesses before selling it. labarraco.com holds position one and position seven on the same Google query for what its service costs, carries 5,170 structured data blocks, and publishes every price while its competitors route you to a quote form. heatlinevip.com runs a video FAQ architecture with 22 timestamped answer pages. Frequently asked

What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

GEO is the work of getting a business named when someone asks an AI assistant like ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI Mode instead of searching Google. Where SEO competes for one of ten blue links, GEO competes to be one of the two or three businesses an assistant names in a single answer.

How is GEO different from SEO?

SEO optimizes for ranking among ten results; GEO optimizes for being quoted inside one answer. The techniques overlap but the priorities differ: GEO rewards self-contained answers, published prices and structured data over keyword placement and link volume. Most businesses need both, because both surfaces still send customers.

How much does GEO cost?

TopWebLA includes it in every SEO plan from $497 per month, or charges $697 per month standalone. US agencies typically charge $1,500 to $10,000 per month for generative engine optimization, with basic tiers around $2,000.

Can you guarantee ChatGPT will mention my business?

No, and neither can anyone else. There is no control panel for what a language model says. What can be done is make your business the most quotable answer available — published prices, structured data, direct answers, genuine reviews — and then measure whether assistants begin naming you.

Do I need GEO if my SEO is already working?

Increasingly yes, because they are different surfaces. A customer who asks an assistant never sees your Google ranking. The reverse is also true. If your customers are the kind of people who ask ChatGPT before calling anyone, the answer is yes.

Does GEO work for Spanish-speaking customers?

Yes, and it is less contested. Assistants answer in the language of the question, and far fewer businesses in the US have citable Spanish content than English. We build both.
