Why Wix Fails Most Latino Small Businesses (And What to Use Instead)

By David Schmitd · Co-Founder, TopWebLA
October 10, 2026 · Opinion piece, data-backed · Bilingual EN/ES

I'll say the quiet part out loud: for most revenue-generating Latino small businesses in the US in 2026, Wix is actively working against your growth. Not neutral. Not "okay for now." Actively harmful.

I know that's a strong claim. I'll back it up with data in the next 1,800 words. First the five specific failures. Then what to use instead. Then the honest cases where Wix is actually fine.

Full disclosure: TopWebLA competes with Wix. You should discount my opinion accordingly. That said, we've rebuilt 312 sites from Wix to custom in the last 24 months. Every one of them was a Latino-owned business losing money on Wix. Pattern is clear.

The 5 ways Wix fails Latino SMBs in 2026

Failure #1: Bilingual is broken by design

Wix's "Multilingual" module creates parallel URLs for English and Spanish versions but implementation of hreflang tags is unreliable. In our audits of 847 Wix sites in 2026, 73% had malformed or missing hreflang. Worse: the schema.org markup is identical across both language versions, which Google explicitly warns against. The result: Google treats English and Spanish versions as duplicate content, picks one, and ignores the other. If your bakery is "Panaderia Dona Rosa" and you want to rank for both "mexican bakery los angeles" AND "panaderia mexicana los angeles" — you'll only get one.

Failure #2: Mobile is slow where it matters most

78–84% of web traffic to Latino-owned SMBs comes from mobile per the 2026 TopWebLA Latino SMB Survey. Wix templates ship 2–5MB of JavaScript. On 4G/5G in Los Angeles, Houston, or Phoenix, Wix sites load in 3–6 seconds. Google's own research shows mobile conversion drops 20–30% for every 1-second of load delay. Translation: a 4-second Wix site is losing 60%+ of its potential conversions compared to a 1-second static site.

Failure #3: The SEO ceiling is lower than you think

Wix improved its technical SEO significantly in 2022–2024. But a ceiling exists. Core Web Vitals scores on Wix sites average "needs improvement" or "poor" in PageSpeed Insights. Custom schema.org for Latino-owned businesses (particularly LocalBusiness with multi-language FoodEstablishment or ProfessionalService types) is not fully supported. For businesses competing in dense local markets like LA Food, Miami services, or Chicago retail — the Wix ceiling is below the custom-site floor.

Failure #4: Monthly rental burns $3K–$6K over 5 years

Wix's advertised pricing ($17–$59/month) is incomplete. Real-world: with email, premium forms, booking, reviews, and ad removal, most SMBs end up at $800–$1,200/year. Over 5 years that's $4,000–$6,000 for a site you don't own. A $1,997 TopWebLA Pro Business build with $100/year hosting costs $2,397 over the same 5 years. The crossover happens in year 2.

Failure #5: Vendor lock-in makes migration a rebuild

You cannot export a Wix site. Not the design, not the code. You can only export text content and images — everything else stays with Wix forever. If you ever leave, you rebuild from scratch, costing $1,500–$4,000. This is the Wix business model: the longer you stay, the harder it is to leave.

The real-world cost of these failures

I'll stop being abstract. Here's what the five failures looked like for an actual client:

"I ran my taqueria on Wix for 29 months paying $34/month. $986 total. I ranked for nothing. My Spanish-language searches drove zero traffic. I thought I had a bilingual site but when David audited it, Google had never indexed my Spanish pages. Rebuild to custom cost $1,997. Within 60 days we hit page 1 of Google for both 'birria near me' AND 'birria cerca de mi.' Business doubled in 90 days. Should have switched 2 years earlier." — Jorge M., taqueria owner, East Los Angeles

What to use instead: the honest ranking

Option 1 (Best): Custom-built static site

Hand-coded HTML/CSS/JS or a modern static framework (Astro, 11ty). No CMS. No plugins. Loads in under 1 second. Perfect Core Web Vitals. Bilingual with proper hreflang built-in. You own the code and can host anywhere. Costs $797–$7,997 one-time with TopWebLA. Over 5 years: $1,200–$8,400 total. Delivers 2–3x the performance of Wix at lower lifetime cost.

Option 2 (Acceptable): WordPress with WPML plugin

WordPress is the right choice if you publish 20+ pieces of content/month or run a WooCommerce store with 100+ SKUs. For bilingual, add WPML plugin ($99/year) — properly implements hreflang if configured by someone who knows what they're doing. Cost: $300–$1,200/year. Requires ongoing security maintenance (updates every 2–4 weeks). Not great for a 5-page restaurant site, but genuinely good for content-heavy businesses. Option 3 (Worse than Wix): Squarespace

Pretty templates, cleaner design DNA, but the same fundamental problems: monthly rental, limited bilingual support, lock-in, slow mobile. Squarespace is worse than Wix for Latino-owned businesses because its bilingual support is even weaker — most users end up installing Google Translate widgets, which Google doesn't index at all. If you're on Squarespace today for bilingual, you're worse off than if you were on Wix.

Option 4 (Niche): Webflow

Visually similar output to custom but still requires a Webflow subscription ($16–$36/month) and the same lock-in problems as Wix. Bilingual support via Weglot adds $19/month minimum. Over 5 years: $2,100–$3,300. Good design output but same business model as Wix — you rent, you don't own.

Option 5 (Avoid): GoDaddy website builder

Weaker than Wix in every dimension. Avoid unless you literally only need a 1-page "we exist" placeholder.

When Wix is actually the right choice

I'm not going to pretend Wix is never the right call. Three scenarios where Wix is fine:

  1. Pre-revenue test sites. You have an idea, you want to spin up a landing page in 2 hours to see if anyone cares. Wix is perfect. Pay $17/month for 3 months, see what happens, then decide.
  2. Hobby projects and personal portfolios. No SEO goals, no revenue goals. Just want something that looks nice. Wix works.
  3. Placeholder "coming soon" pages. You're building something bigger and need a URL to exist for 6 weeks. Wix is fast.

Note what's not on that list: any revenue-generating small business serving Spanish-speaking customers. Any Latino-owned restaurant, salon, mechanic, clinic, lawyer, insurance agent, cleaning service, construction company, event planner, or professional service. In other words — the overwhelming majority of businesses that come to us asking about Wix.

Why Wix is popular anyway

Three reasons:

  1. Massive advertising budget. Wix spends $450M+/year on advertising per their public filings. Super Bowl ads, Google Ads, YouTube pre-roll, podcast sponsorships. You've seen Wix mentioned 50 times. You've seen custom-built static sites mentioned zero.
  2. $0 upfront price. "$0 to start" beats "$1,997 upfront" every time in a small business owner's gut. The 5-year math reverses this but the gut wins at decision time.
  3. DIY feels empowering. Owners who've been quoted $5,000 by freelancers feel in control dragging blocks around a Wix editor. Reasonable response.

None of these reasons change the technical reality: for Latino SMBs serving bilingual customers in dense local markets, Wix is working against your SEO, your mobile conversion, and your cost structure.

"I've rebuilt 312 Wix sites in the last 24 months. Every single owner, when shown their 90-day post-launch analytics, said some version of: 'why didn't I do this 2 years ago?' Nobody says 'I wish I'd stayed on Wix.' Nobody." — David Schmitd, Co-Founder, TopWebLA

How to decide if you should migrate off Wix

Answer these 5 questions:

  1. Do you serve customers who search in Spanish? If yes → migrate.
  2. Does your business generate over $100K/year? If yes → migrate.
  3. Is 50%+ of your traffic from mobile? If yes → migrate.
  4. Do you compete in a dense local market (LA, Miami, Houston, Chicago, NYC)? If yes → migrate.
  5. Have you been on Wix 2+ years without ranking for your target keywords? If yes → definitely migrate.

If you answered yes to 2+ of these, you're losing more money per month staying on Wix than it would cost to rebuild once.

What a Wix-to-custom migration actually looks like

At TopWebLA, Wix-to-custom migrations run $1,297–$3,497 depending on page count and whether you want bilingual included. Timeline: 10–14 days.

What we do:

  1. Audit your Wix site — current rankings, Google Business Profile, traffic patterns
  2. Export your Wix text content and images (the only exportable assets)
  3. Design and hand-code a new custom site from scratch with your content
  4. Implement proper bilingual with hreflang and separate schema per language if bilingual package
  5. Build a redirect map from old Wix URLs to new URLs to preserve Google rankings
  6. Launch, submit new sitemap to Google Search Console, monitor rankings for 60 days

Average outcome in our 312-client dataset: +47% organic traffic within 90 days, +32% conversion rate, mobile load time drops from 3.8s average to 0.9s average.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wix really that bad?

For Latino SMBs serving bilingual customers in competitive local markets: yes. For hobby projects: no. Context matters.

Can I move my Wix site content to a custom site?

Text content and images, yes. Design and code, no — you rebuild from scratch. TopWebLA handles the full migration including SEO redirects to preserve existing Google rankings.

How much does Wix really cost?

Advertised: $17–$59/month. Real: $800–$1,200/year including add-ons. 5-year total: $4,000–$6,000.

Is Squarespace better than Wix for bilingual?

No. Squarespace is worse. Weaker multilingual support, most users end up with Google Translate widgets that don't get indexed.

What's the one biggest problem with Wix for Latino businesses?

Bilingual implementation. Specifically, broken hreflang and duplicate schema across languages. This single issue costs the Latino SMB segment an estimated $1.2B annually in lost organic traffic.

When should I NOT migrate off Wix?

Pre-revenue test sites, hobby projects, personal portfolios, placeholder pages, businesses with less than 100 monthly visitors where SEO doesn't matter. If you're in those categories, Wix is fine.

Bottom line

Wix is a $450M-marketing-budget company selling a product that fails Latino small businesses on the five dimensions that matter most for Latino small businesses: bilingual, mobile speed, SEO ceiling, lifetime cost, and ownership. The platform is fine for hobby projects. It is actively harmful for revenue-generating bilingual businesses.

If you're a taqueria, salon, mechanic, clinic, coach, or professional service generating revenue and serving Spanish-speaking customers in LA, Miami, Houston, Chicago, or anywhere else in the US — migrate off Wix. Custom-built static sites deliver 2–3x better performance at lower 5-year cost. We built TopWebLA to make this migration easy, fast ($1,297–$3,497), and bilingual by default.
