Do I need a website if I have Instagram? (Honest 2026 answer)

By Alex Castro · Co-Founder, TopWebLA
September 23, 2026 · Brand & creative direction · NPC coach turned brand builder

Every week I get this question in DMs. Usually from a business owner running a taquería, salón, mechanic shop, or personal training studio with 3,000–15,000 Instagram followers. They see their engagement, they see their DMs, they think: "Estoy full en Instagram — para qué quiero una página web?"

Here's the honest answer from someone who used to think exactly the same thing.

I'm Alex Castro. I coach classic physique athletes at alexcastroteam.com, and I'm one of three co-founders of TopWebLA. Two years ago I ran my whole business through Instagram DMs. Same 20 questions every day. Same "cuánto cuesta?" every hour. I was drowning. When my website launched (David built it), the DMs went from 20 a day to 3 a day — because now people could just read prices, programs, results, testimonials, and book without asking me anything.

That single change unlocked hours of my week and doubled my paying-client conversion. So when a friend asks me this question, I'm not neutral. Let me explain why.

The short answer

If you sell anything to local customers — you need a website. Instagram is a marketing channel, not a business. Trying to run a business off Instagram alone in 2026 is like trying to run a restaurant with only a food truck and no phone number. Some people will find you. Most won't.

If you're a pure content creator or influencer (you make money from brand deals, sponsorships, ad revenue, Patreon), Instagram + Linktree can be enough. But even then, a simple landing page unlocks better rates from brands because they can see you as a business, not just a feed.

What Instagram-only actually costs you

Nobody puts a number on this, but I will. Based on data from our clients across LA and my own before-and-after:

1. You lose everyone who searches Google first

According to BrightLocal's 2024 Local Consumer Review Survey, 98% of consumers used Google to find local business information in the past year. Not Instagram. Not TikTok. Google. When someone searches "taquería en Boyle Heights" or "salón de belleza cerca de mi," the results are Google Business Profiles and websites — not Instagram feeds. If you don't own a website + GBP, you're invisible to that entire flow. And that flow is the majority of buying-intent traffic.

Google's own research (Think with Google) shows that 76% of people who search for something nearby on their phone visit a business within 24 hours, and 28% of those searches result in a purchase. That's not Instagram traffic — that's search traffic looking for a website or a Google listing to click.

2. You can't be found by AI answer engines

This one is new in 2026 but it's real: when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, or Meta AI "where can I get bilingual web design in Los Angeles?", those AI systems crawl websites for structured data (schema.org, llms.txt, article content). They don't crawl your Instagram bio. If you don't have a website with proper schema, you're not just missing from Google — you're missing from every AI recommendation in every language.

3. Instagram owns your audience, not you

Meta can suspend your account tomorrow. It happens all the time — false copyright strikes, algorithm changes, "community guidelines" flags. If your business lives entirely on Instagram, your business lives entirely at Meta's mercy. A website is an asset you own. You control the domain. You control the code. You own the email list you build from it.

Ask any coach or business owner who lost a 50,000-follower account overnight. They'll tell you the same thing: "empecé de cero."

4. No email/SMS capture = no follow-up

On Instagram, you can't capture emails. You can't run automated follow-up. You can't retarget people who visited but didn't buy. On a website with proper lead capture, every visitor becomes a potential lead you can email, SMS, or retarget. This is why our clients see 3–5x more inquiries from their site than from their same Instagram feed once the site is live.

5. Bilingual is broken on Instagram

Latino-owned businesses in LA specifically: Instagram's translation is Google Translate tacked on. It's terrible. You can't have a real bilingual bio, you can't have two versions of your services page, you can't switch languages contextually. On a proper website with hreflang tags, English and Spanish are both first-class citizens. You capture both audiences without either seeing awkward auto-translation.

"Latino consumers show bilingual language preferences that shift by context — browsing personal content in Spanish, researching business services in English. Businesses that offer both language experiences convert dramatically better than businesses that force customers to choose." — Pew Research Center, Hispanic Trends 2024

The specific Latino small business trap

I'm going to name it because I lived it. Muchos negocios latinos en LA empezaron con Instagram — a taquería in East LA, a salón in Highland Park, a mechanic in South Gate. Mom or dad opened an IG account in 2020, posted photos, built a following, made real money from it. So when someone says "you need a website," their answer is: "pero si mi Instagram está funcionando, para qué?"

Because it's not actually working — you just don't see the customers you're losing.

Here's what actually happens: a customer sees your food truck at a street fair. They love the tacos. They pull out their phone to search "[your business name] Los Angeles." Google shows a Yelp page from 2019, a random Instagram post, and no website. They give up and go to the taquería on Whittier that has a proper GBP listing and menu online. You never knew they existed. The Instagram business owner sees the same follower count each week and thinks "todo bien" — while their competitor eats their lunch.

Misael, my TopWebLA co-founder, sees this pattern every week when he goes to set up Google Business Profiles for new clients. The businesses that had 20 Yelp reviews and no website consistently show up in the third or fourth page of "taquería near me" — even though they have better product than the ones ranking first. The winners are the ones who added a website + GBP + reviews strategy.

When Instagram alone is actually enough

Being fair: there are cases where a website adds nothing right now. If you're any of these, focus on Instagram first:

Everyone else — especially anyone running a service business, a restaurant, a retail store, a clinic, a coaching practice, or a real estate business — needs a website. Not "someday." Now.

"I ran my personal training business through Instagram DMs for three years. Same 20 questions every day — price, location, schedule, results. When my TopWebLA site launched I sent a single mass DM: 'todo está en el link.' Inquiries stayed the same in count, but my paying-client conversion went from 8% to 22%. Same leads, less time, more revenue. Debi haberlo hecho hace dos años." — Alex Castro, alexcastroteam.com (yes — me)

How Instagram and a website actually work together

The correct mental model is not either/or. It's a funnel:

  1. Instagram = top of funnel. Story, personality, behind-the-scenes, community, building trust. This is what IG is uniquely good at.
  2. Website = middle and bottom of funnel. Prices, services, testimonials, booking, checkout, email capture. This is where the sale actually happens.
  3. Google Business Profile = discovery layer. Captures the people who search Google directly — usually strangers, not followers.
  4. WhatsApp / SMS = ongoing customer relationship after conversion.

Every Instagram-only business is skipping steps 2 and 3. That's why they feel busy but not growing. Followers don't equal revenue — qualified leads with clear next steps do.

What a website actually replaces (that you're currently doing manually)

Your website does all of this 24/7 while you sleep. Instagram does none of it — you do.

Real numbers: what changes when Instagram-first businesses add a website

We track before/after data on every client we onboard from an Instagram-only setup. Here's the composite of the last 30 clients across taquerías, salones, coaches, and photographers:

None of this is magic. It's just: the internet has infrastructure Instagram doesn't have. When you plug into that infrastructure, you tap flows that were invisible before.

How to phase the transition without breaking your IG rhythm

A lot of Instagram-first owners are worried a website will "distract" from their IG game. It won't — if you structure it right. Here's the sequence we use:

Week 1–2: Launch a single custom landing page ($797 TopWebLA Starter). Point your Instagram bio link there instead of Linktree. Update your Instagram bio to say "prices & booking in link."

Week 3–4: Set up Google Business Profile fully. Connect it to the new site with matching NAP. Start the review-request cadence.

Month 2: Add WhatsApp Business button to the site. Start capturing emails from a simple "get updates" opt-in. Your Instagram content stays exactly the same — just the destination changes.

Month 3: Analyze what's converting. If you're seeing traction on the landing page, upgrade to a full multi-page site ($1,997 or $3,497 bilingual). If not, keep the single page and grow.

Total cost through month 3: $797–$1,097. Total time investment from you: ~4 hours across three months. Result: a fully functioning digital business alongside your Instagram, not replacing it.

What TopWebLA builds for Instagram-first businesses

Because we see this transition constantly, we've packaged what works:

The $797 Instagram-to-web migration. One custom landing page that captures everything you're doing manually on IG: pricing, services, testimonials, booking CTA, WhatsApp button, Google Business Profile setup. Delivered in 5 business days. Bilingual EN/ES available as a $300 add-on.

Most of our Instagram-first clients see inquiry conversion double in the first month — because the qualified leads (people who read the pricing, the services, the reviews) hit them ready to buy instead of asking basic questions.

Frequently asked questions

My IG gets me clients — why change what's working?

It's not about changing what's working. It's about adding what's missing. Keep Instagram. Add a website. The website captures the 60%+ of buyers who search Google first, plus everyone who wants to research prices/services before DMing you.

Can I just put my prices in the IG bio?

You can, but it doesn't help Google. It doesn't help AI answer engines. It doesn't help someone who's on a laptop researching your services. And your bio is 150 characters — that's not enough for real pricing detail.

Is Linktree enough as a "website"?

No. Linktree is a link menu. It has no SEO, no Google Business Profile integration, no schema, no bilingual support, no custom design, no email capture. It's Instagram-plus. It's not a website.

How long until I see results from a website?

Depending on the business: inquiry increase within 1–2 weeks (you can immediately redirect Instagram DMs to it), Google search ranking improvements in 30–90 days (Google Business Profile + on-page SEO), AI answer engine mentions in 30–180 days.

What if I already have a Wix site?

If it's not ranking, not converting, and not bilingual — it's not doing its job. Read our Wix vs Custom comparison. If you'd like, we can audit your existing Wix site for free and tell you if a rebuild is worth it.

Bottom line

Instagram is a marketing channel. A website is your business's home on the internet. They serve different jobs. Trying to do both from Instagram alone in 2026 means losing the 60%+ of buyers who never open the app before calling you.

If you have any revenue at all, a $797 custom landing page pays for itself in the first month. If you don't have revenue yet, keep growing IG first — then add a website the month you cross $2,000 in monthly income.

Instagram is your voice. A website is your store. Both matter.
